IRS Re-Establishes $6,900 as HSA Family Contribution Limit for 2018

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has re-established $6,900 as the 2018 health savings account (HSA) contribution limit for individuals with family coverage under a high deductible health plan (HDHP).

This family contribution limit was originally announced as $6,900 in May 2017, but was revised to $6,850 in March 2018 in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2018-10 due to an inflation adjustment provision in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Released late last week, Internal Revenue Procedure 2018-27 indicates the IRS will accept $6,900 as the 2018 HSA family contribution maximum. While the family HSA contribution limit officially remains $6,850, due to the timing of the change, the IRS will treat $6,900 as the limit for 2018.

The 2018 health savings account (HSA) contribution limit for individuals with self-only coverage under a HDHP continues to remain unchanged at $3,450.

NOTE: The 2019 IRS HSA limits have not yet been released.
